“Glowing skin is a result of proper skincare. It means you can wear less makeup and let skin shine through” by Michel Coulombe a Global Makeup artist.

Getting started with a skincare routine is pretty intimidating for beginners. More so than some thousands of products, blogs, and regimes that are there in the market. It becomes a difficult decision to take on who, why, and how to trust a product or a blogger.

Don’t worry, this article talks about the 4 steps for effective skincare and it will help you take a call and understand why a skincare routine is a must and what are the secrets to skincare routine for beginners.

Firstly, let’s get started with the basics.

Step 1: Different skin types and understanding your type

As the popular saying goes “One size doesn’t fit it all”. It applies to skincare as well. In order to build a specific skincare regimen for yourself, it is best to know your skin type.

Different skin types have different needs which must be taken care of accordingly and if the right regime is not followed it aggravates the existing issues and does not take your skin to a better place. So let us take our first step towards change.

Let's start with a new change

So, let’s understand more about the different types of skin first.

The types of skin can be broadly classified into:

  1. Oily skin: It is the type that looks shiny due to the over secretion of oils. This skin type is oily and shiny in appearance and is prone to breakouts.
  2. Sensitive skin: It is the gentlest skin type and must be taken care of properly. This type of skin is very red and irritated. It requires additional care to fight against dryness, roughness, allergies.
  3. Dry skin: It is the type that is dry and flakey. You feel that your skin becomes tight after you wash your face. Your skin is very tight, uneven texture, and itchy.
  4. Combination skin: It is the type which is a combo of oily and flakey areas. The areas with more oil is usually the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). The skin on the cheeks is normal or dry.
  5. Normal skin: In this type, the skin is neither too oily nor too dry. It is perfect and does not require any special care. You may experience fine texture, occasional breakouts, and pores.
Identifying your skin type:

If you want to understand which category your skin falls under, then I would suggest that the previous night wash your skin well and go to bed without applying any skincare product. After you wake up the next morning the first thing you do is touch your skin and you can see under which skin type you fall into.

I know you must be wondering why must I follow a skincare routine??

And am sure like most of us (including me) different excuses must be popping in your head;

I’m busy with my life”

or

“my skin looks perfect I don’t need a routine

or even worst

I’m blessed with good skin so why do I invest my time and money on skincare

Sorry to burst the bubble but read this prase;

“Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty” by Coco Channel .

So, let me throw some light on why it is a must to have a skincare regime and follow it religiously so that every beginner to this skincare world can start it now.

Step 2: Understanding the importance of skincare for beginners

Developing a good skincare routine is key because the better you take care of your skin the better it will take care of you. This means that if your skin feels and looks fresh, looks clean, and neat you have more confidence in yourself you can use fewer makeup products and eventually also reduces your visits to a dermatologist.

Your skin acts as a barrier and acts as a filter to avoid a lot of things outside like pollution, harmful UV rays, and allergies (pollen, dust, air). You need to know that there are 100 ‘s of dead skin cells on you every day which has to be washed off completely.

Having a good skin care regimen helps you to reduce the number of dead skin cells you have on your skin.

So, as you have seen in step 1 of the article, based on your skin type and skin concern you must build your own skincare routine.

Step 3: Know the 4 Rules to build a skincare routine for beginners

Now that you know what your skin type is are you excited to start building up your regime??

But before that, you need to keep these 4 rules in mind especially if you are a beginner.

Rule 1: Never mess up with the order in your routine

What does that mean?

It means that the order in which you apply the products must never be messed up. You will get to know what order you must use the products later in the article.

By following the order perfectly it will make the product work more effectively on your skin.

Tip: Start with a watery texture product and top it up with a more creamy and thicker texture so that the products absorb easily into your skin.

Rule 2: Have a morning and night routine separately

As your morning and night schedules and work are different, similarly your skin conditions are different as well. So, keep your morning and night regimes separate.

Your morning regime focusses mostly on the dirt and impurities and also removes the skincare products applied in the night before. It gives your skin a clean fresh start.

Whereas, your night routine helps you get rid of all the impurities that are built up. It removes the sunblock and sebum that is built up underneath the clogged pores.

Rule 3: Know your skin type and which products to use for your type

You MUST know your skin type and your skin concerns before you start building your skincare routine. As you have seen in step 1 of the article, that if a correct product that is suitable for your skin type is not used it will lead to further skin concerns like breakouts, acne, and so on.

Rule 4: Mix and match the ingredients in the products well

There are some ingredients that are good to use together and also some that must not be combined together. Do thorough research before you include the products in your routine.

  • Ingredients good to use together: Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
  • Ingredients not to use together: Vitamin C and AHA and BHA.

Now that you have a fair understanding of your skin type and why it is essential to have a skincare routine for beginners, let’s jump into the most crucial step that is what are the steps to consider while starting a routine.

Step 4: Building your own skincare regime

If you are just starting with your skincare then these are the basic steps to start and you can build up based on your skin concerns or issues anytime required.

Morning skincare routine for beginners:

The morning skincare routine for beginners must at least have the following 5 steps:

  • Step 1 Cleanser: The cleansing step helps to remove the dirt, natural oils, and all the products used in the previous night. Use a cleanser based on your skin type:
    • Oily Skin: Foam cleanser
    • Dry skin: Cream or lotion-based cleanser
    • Sensitive skin: Oil-based cleanser
    • Normal skin: Gel/ foam-based cleanser
  • Step 2 Toner: The toning step is an important step to hydrate the skin and prep the skin for the following skincare steps.

Tip: Applying toner with clean hands is very effective. You can just pour a few drops of toner in your palm and tap it into your skin. Or you can use a cotton pad and add a few drops of toner on it and dab it on your face.

  • Step 3 Serum or Essence: The serum step helps to keep the skin hydrated throughout the day. These are powerful partners for our skin. These are full of powerful active ingredients that attack your specific type of skin concern. Even if you don’t have any specific concern you can use a good antioxidant serum which helps to fight against your daily attackers on the skin.

Use a serum based on your specific skin concerns:

    • Vitamin C serum: Brightens skin and reduces dark spots and pigmentation
    • Hyaluronic acid: Seals in the moisture to prevent moisture loss
  • Step 4 Moisturizing cream: This step perfectly creates a barrier to lock in the moisture. It makes your skin feel soft and supple.

Myth: Do I need to apply a moisturizer if I have oily or combination skin type? The answer is Yes. If there is a deficit of moisture, your skin starts to produce more oil in order to compensate for the deficit which leads to clogged pores and breakouts.

Use a moisturizer based on your skin type:

    • Oily skin: Gel moisturizer
    • Normal/ combination skin: Lotion moisturizer
    • Dry skin: Cream-based moisturizer
  • Step 5 Sunscreen: It is the MUST crucial step in your morning skincare routine. The sunscreen acts as a filter whenever you are out. It is a priority for keeping your skin looking and feeling youthful. Daily applying sunscreen can help you from preventing skin cancers as well. Most of the skin experts and dermatologists recommend using a daily moisturizer with a built-in broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30.

Tip: It is advisable to apply sunscreen at least 30 mins before sun exposure and reapply it every 2 hours.

Night skincare routine for beginners:

The night skincare routine for beginners must at least have the following 7 steps:

Night care Steps

  • Step 1 Remove Makeup: The primary step in your night starts with removing any makeup you have used in the morning. This can be done using makeup removing products.
  • Step 2 Cleanser: The cleansing step helps to remove all the impurities caused by exposure to the outside world. Use a cleanser based on your skin type:
    • Oily Skin: Foam cleanser
    • Dry skin: Cream or lotion-based cleanser
    • Sensitive skin: Oil-based cleanser
    • Normal skin: Gel/ foam-based cleanser
  • Step 3 Toner: The toning step is an important step to hydrate the skin and prep the skin for the following skincare steps.

Tip: Applying toner with clean hands is very effective. You can just pour a few drops of toner in your palm and tap it into your skin. Or you can use a cotton pad and add a few drops of toner on it and dab it on your face.

  • Step 4 Serum or Essence: The serum step helps to keep the skin hydrated throughout the day. These are powerful partners to our skin.

At night time you can specifically use serums which are targeting your concerns:

    • Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin B3, and Peptides: Stimulates collagen production, prevents fine lines and skin sagging
    • Niacinamide: Calms inflammation in the skin and fights acne with its antimicrobial properties

Tip: If you are using Retinol at night it is a MUST to use a good SPF 30 sunscreen in the morning else, your skin may become very dry and flaky.

  • Step 5 Sheet masks: This is an optional step. Sheet masks offer highly effective concentration to treat concern areas. The sheet masks are filled up with serums and can be absorbed more easily.

Tip: You can keep your sheet masks in the fridge to get the anti-inflammatory benefits as well. It is advisable to use sheet masks at least twice a week.

  • Step 6 Under-eye cream:  Include a good under eye cream or gel from your early 20’s to avoid wrinkles and fine lines under your eyes. Your eye area is the most delicate area of your skin so simply tap on a good hydrating eye gel to repair your skin barriers overnight.
  • Step 7 Moisturizing cream: Your skin undergoes a repair process in the night and boosts the regeneration process. It is highly recommended that you have a separate moisturizer for the night regime which also has the ingredients mentioned in the serum list, however as a beginner you can first invest in a single moisturizer which can be used for both night and day.

So, once you have understood all about the facts and completed with research it is time to put them together into a routine for morning and evening.

As the famous saying goes:

Skin care is like dieting. You have to invest time and effort. There is no instant miracle cure.” by Karen Gran

Remember the key to beauty is to maintain consistency and persevere. Don’t get upset if you don’t see any change overnight. For noticeable results follow the routine at least for 6 weeks.
